Car Crash Today
This morning, I was talkin' with my truck driving friends at the counter. And they told me the most horrific story! They witnessed a car crash this morning. This small tan car with children, mattresses, and all different kind of cooking tools was hit by another vehicle. They were going at least 90 mph and just rammed into this poor little car just trying to get to California. Apparently, the driver got out of the car and stared at the mess he just made. He didn't know what to do so he just stood there. It kind of makes you think about what you might have done in the situation. To be quite honest, I'm not even sure I would have the courage to get out of the car in the first place to face what I had done. It kind of highlights that these rich people are on the same road we are on. Do not get me wrong though, I have no sympathy for that driver. I hope they are all okay:(
A Little Tip for my Fellow Diner workers
If any of you have a slot machine in your Diner, this is what you do. You play any change you have left in your drawer that day until you get jackpot. Then you take your jackpot money and put it back in the cash register drawer. It helps to make it look like you made a profit. It works well when you get as desperate as we are on Route 66. You can credit that tip to my good friend Al. I would have never thought of something like that in my life. He just walked over and did it with no fear about losing our profits of the day. What a man!

Pies, Pies and more Pies!
Al and I had some extra pie left over at the end of the day so we decided to try them and rank them!
1. Chocolate Cream pie
Who doesn't like chocolate? This wasn't really Al's favorite but I loved it so much it had to be first.
2. Apple Pie
The apple pie kind of reminded Al and I of Christmas, and everyone loves Christmas.
3. Banana Cream
This one wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. Al said it reminded him of a comedy movie. I don't question Al's strangeness.
4. Pineapple Cream
Pineapple and pie should never be mixed together. Ever.
Learned Something Today
Story time!
The day began like any other: crowds shuffling in and out, cleaned the floors, and dealing with unpleasant customers. Very typical. However something interesting happened. This guy came in with his 2 kids and approached me at the counter. Now I am not wealthy at all, but these folks were clearly worse off than myself. The guy asks for a loaf of bread, so I pull out one of our fresh loaves and tell him its 15 cents. He only has 10 cents on him so I start by saying that he cannot have the bread. I was just being a good shop keeper. But Al turns around and tells me to give him the loaf. Following orders, I give the guy the loaf for 15 cents. Big whoop right? But wait there is more! I see his kids eyeing the candy we have on the counter. The kid asks if they are a penny each, and do you know what I tell him? They are 2 for a penny. The kids take the candy and they get on the road with their father. That's when Al asked me why I gave them candy that was a nickel each just for a penny. You know why? Because we are all in this together. We all have to deal with this poor economy, so why not deal with it by helping each other out? Anyway, I turn around for a moment, and I turn back and some of my truck driver friends are bolting out of the restaurant. I look to see why, and what do I find? They left me a huge tip on the counter. At first I was angry, but then I realized how rewarding (and profitable:) a little act of kindness can be. Just thought I would share.

Gotta Love 'Dem Truck Drivers
Just got home from work and I was thinkin' about how much I love it when truck drivers stop in our little establishment. I mean I have to deal with the worst, snotty people I have ever met all day and then these gentlemen come in here and make it all better. They are...what is the word...grounded? They know what's up and they don't act like thy are rich or have money (even though I know they do). Every time they come in they leave a generous tip behind and I have to mention that they never EVER leave without makin' me laugh. I remember a few days ago this one guy comes in and sits down at my counter askin' for some apple pie. I start cutting him a piece and he starts tellin' me this story about a kid at school who called his dad a bull! I had to laugh, but reading this now it was more a you had to be there moment. Oh well, just thought I would share the love :)
Route 66
Lately I've kind of been thinking how even though Al and I see cars rushing past us everyday, whenever someone stops by it's like meeting a new friend. Sometimes I feel bad that I can't help them get what they want but in the end I think seeing other travelers and unloading some of their problems or just resting for awhile makes them feel a little better. Almost like we're a little community out here on this busy road.
